Little about the Uyghur People

In the middle of the desert landscapes of Taklamakan, in the northern-west part of China, the province of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is the very least populated land whereas it covers close to a sixth with the country's territory. Having resisted while in centuries the chinese control, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, or Old Eastern Turkestan, fell into under the Chinese Han control in 1949. From then, its population is mainly Uyghur People and Turkic - speaking System.

Islamic especially, the Uyghur people have a solid religious identity that, in particular, allowed them to keep a solid difference towards the Chinese invader. Really, the Uyghur Empire of Mongolia knew a brilliant civilization, until its absorption by the Mongolian Empire in the XIIIth century.

During their history, the Uyghur People successively taken on Shamanism, Manicheism, Buddhism and the Nestorianism before finally changing to Islam when the Arab conquerors beat the Chinese in year 751 BC., thus opening the way to the Islamization of the entire Central Asia.

Under the effect of the beliefs which they adopted, Uyghur People taken successively, and at times in a competing way, a great number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own graphic system.

The coming of Islam was a great modification since it was supported by the assimilation of the Uyghur land in the immense Turkic and Islamic Kingdom. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan progressively replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used at present.

If their writing, their own language and their religion mark a real big difference with the tradition of Chinese Han, Uyghur People also differ from their characteristic, so aspect of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features pointing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek roots of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has integrated the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only 8 million people - a little for this great region. Therefore, Uyghur people are now part of the 56 ethnic minority groups having been well known in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This particular statute allows them a few rights in a country exactly where their difference is very often repressed. Therefore, Uyghur people escape the "single child policy" and their language is accepted as the second official language in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The integration of the Uyghurs and their culture in China, however, appears pretty illusory. The presence of all natural sources in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and its area with countries acknowledged as very sensitive, clearly encouraged the government to accelerate the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the more significant responsibility work opportunities.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Asserting more flexibility, but mainly the recognition of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in area Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The situations of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghurs population continues today to proudly continue to keep their identity and their traditions , even though they become a minority on their own land.

Whos Making Money

Washington (CNN) – While Donald Trump may be focusing on his television show, a senior adviser - who has been pushing a possible presidential bid for the real estate tycoon - will make a visit to Iowa on Monday.

Michael Cohen, executive vice president at the Trump Organization and a special counsel to Trump, will go to Des Moines on Monday to meet with Republican party officials, organizers and potential sources of campaign money.

Cohen helped create the website ShouldTrumpRun.com, which is not connected to Trump and was set up independently. His visit comes on a day six other likely Republican candidates will be in the state, home to the nation's first caucuses February 6.

"I'll be meeting with significant people in Iowa, including large donors," he told CNN. "I'm gauging the reception Mr. Trump would have … In June, when he hopefully decides to run, I'll be able to turn the information over to him."

Cohen said he is meeting with about a dozen "leading GOP representatives" during the trip. And though Trump is aware of the trip, he did not ask his adviser to go.

He will also attend the Iowa Faith and Freedom spring event Monday night, where Newt Gingrich, Tim Pawlenty, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum and Buddy Roemer will address a gathering of social conservatives.

Trump, who won't make a decision on whether to run for the presidency until the last episode of "Celebrity Apprentice" airs, told the Des Moines Register that he may make a visit to Iowa before making the final call. "I will meet many, many people, maybe all of the people. If I decide to run, I will be shaking hands with everybody," he said.

One person who's not a fan of Trump is Sen. Lamar Alexander, R- Tennessee. He told Candy Crowley on CNN's "State of the Union" that Trump's favorable ratings in a recent poll "says more about the media than Donald Trump."

Alexander said, "There's always someone like Donald Trump who runs who has absolutely no chance of winning and who is well known. I mean, he's famous for being famous. He may be good in business but he's not going to be president."

CNN's Steve Brusk and Natalie Apsell contributed to this story.

I think the whole rhythm of the filmmaking and the dialogue is different than what it would have been. It flows in a more emotional and staccato way. It’s interwoven and interlaced with a level of humor and emotional intensity that are based on the realism of the characters. Also the movie within a movie, the HBO documentary about Dicky, the Christian Bale character, is real and I seized upon that as a filmmaker and wanted to use that as a device in the film. Not only dramatically as a defining moment, which Scott Silver had focused on, but I wanted to also use it as a framing device throughout the film, that there was this documentary crew around and you could do interviews with the characters. So we did interviews with Mark and Christian as the characters on the fly and we did interviews with the sisters. We did interviews with local people who used to be mayor and town manager and real people about Dicky and Micky and their impact on the city, and that all got used in the movie as part of the story.

Music was also something that I really focused on, the style of music that these guys would listen to and the kind of soundtrack that would really propel through their story and that resulted in some of the great music that’s in the movie that I think is married well to the dramatic turns.

We actually had the opportunity to ask some of our listeners what questions they might have for you and Ben here asks, “I’d like to hear about the choice to use the song ‘Here Again I Go On My Own’. Was the scene where the two brothers sing along while walking to the ring based on reality or was it just the most incredible filmmaking choice of 2010? And if it was invented, who invented it? The power of that moment where these two guys find solidarity in this song before the big moment, combined with the fact that it is a song more associated with hair metal silliness more than emotion, made it probably my favorite scene of the year and I’d like to hear David O. Russell talk about it. Any thoughts about that particular choice?

That song, the Whitesnake song, was one Micky actually used as his entrance song for many of his fights. I always want to look for the most emotional and poignant thing, such as the moment when Alice sings in the car with Dicky and they sing that Bee Gees song, which to me that was a very powerful way to show their special bond. In this case, to show the bond between the two brothers, I thought it was very affecting to see them in the tunnel, to see their emotional bond before they went out to this big event and for Dicky to be singing the song with Micky and for them to be singing it together, so that was an idea I brought to the film.

You mention that song with Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. “Jag” asks about incest relationships in your films, [one being] Spanking the Monkey obviously. But also according to “Jag”, I don’t know if this is correct, that you have said before that Melissa Leo and Christian Bale’s relationship feels in some ways incestuous, especially in the scene where Bale is singing to her in the car. Can you comment on that or is that way off base?

No, that’s absolutely true. When I was first looking at the story, I immediately said there’s an incestuous relationship thing going on here and when I was selling myself as a director, I said I want to make more of the emotion of the relationship. This movie’s in my wheelhouse because I totally get those kind of family relationships having done Spanking the Monkey and Flirting With Disaster and I really think that sort of odd bond between Alice and Dicky should really be felt emotionally and almost romantically. When you look at their family albums, Alice, god bless her after having had nine kids, is still a beautiful woman who could look like she was as much her son’s girlfriend as much as she was his mom so that is true.

I promise this will be the last time I mention Darren Aronofsky’s name during this interview –

You can mention him as many times as you want because I was happy that Darren’s credit showed up on the film right before we went to final print. I said, “What that all about?” and they said he had the right to put his name on the film contractually and he saw the film and loved it and he wants his name on it so I take it as a compliment.

Right, because you mentioned in the EW interview that you were taken aback when he called to tell you about wanting to getting executive producer credit and I kind of wanted you to elaborate on that if you could.

Oh no he didn’t call me, I saw the credit on the final cut of the film and I said “What?” And yeah, I was taken aback. But then he was very sweet about it when I did see him. He embraced me and told me how much he loved the film and I’d heard he wanted his name on there because he loved the film and I think that’s a great compliment coming from a great filmmaker.

It’s been a number of years since your last film and we’ve heard about a bunch of projects that you’ve been attached to, for example Grackle with Matthew McConaughey and Nailed as well. For some reason these projects haven’t gone very smoothly. I’m wondering if you could talk a little about these projects and are there any sort of common factors that you can identify that cause problems, do you feel like you choose tricky projects or tricky ways of financing them?

Well, we need to be specific about what’s what because people, especially in the age of the Internet, just start chucking ideas around which are not based in fact and they pretty much just get picked up as fact. They’re all different. I wrote a couple of things after Huckabees that didn’t get made and that was my own responsibility because I decided not to make them. I was going through a period where I wasn’t feeling the material and a harder period for me as a filmmaker. It also resulted in me becoming a better filmmaker and a better writer and a more instinctive one. But there was a period there where I was questioning everything and Huckabees wasn’t entirely what I wanted it to be and I was going through a divorce so I can take responsibility for that.

Nailed was a project that any of the troubles with that had nothing to do with me. Those was about the company was financing it, and this was during the Madoff era, was inconsistent. I had never seen anything like it. Our financing got turned on and off like a faucet and we were shut down nine times during the production, having nothing to do with me, just having to do with the nature of the financing company. After that went on enough times I had to move on with my life, I have a family to support and I had to move on and write other things and make other films, you know? I spent almost two years trying to get that finished and I just said ok, I got to move on.

The Grackle was a picture that was written by the guys who wrote Bad Santa, [John] Requa and [Glenn] Ficarra, really funny, smart writers. They were the guys who also made I Love You Phillip Morris, great directors too. I thought that could be really funny. I was talking about making that and getting them to do a draft when my dear friend Mark Wahlberg came to me with The Fighter. So as much as I thought that was really a funny project, if I have to pick between someone who’s a little like a brother to me and that other project I’m going to have to go with The Fighter.

Those guys wrote me, Requa and Ficarra, and they said, “Gee, now you’re really sorry you didn’t make The Grackle aren’t you?” They meant it as a joke. [laughs]

[laughs] I think you made the right choice, actually.

[laughs]

Well that’s interesting and I apologize, I did not mean to perpetuate –

Oh no need to apologize man, I’m happy to answer any of those questions, I just want to set them straight.

Right, right. Now last question about projects. This is from Rodrigo from The Playlist who’s asking these questions about Old St. Louis with Vince Vaughn.

Let’s talk about that. That was a really good project that I re-wrote for Vince kind of in the vein of Paper Moon. I thought I’d be making that this autumn but it’s really not up to me a lot of times. In that case a lot of it was up to Vince who decided to make the Ron Howard project instead, because we were supposed to making that, and he went off to make The Dilemma with Kevin James and that’s what happened with that. So, you know –

Yeah, sometimes things just don’t work out or don’t happen, I understand.

Well there’s still talk about making that project and we may still make it when the timing’s right. That happens all the time in this business.

I gotta ask you about Uncharted. Can you talk about your relationship with the property to begin with, had you played the games before you were approached with the project in the first place and just talk a little about that because it’s certainly one of my favorite games on the Playstation.

Ah, big game player!

I wouldn’t describe it that way, but sure.

My good friend Chuck Roven who produced the Batman movies like The Dark Knight, and produced Three Kings with me, came to me with Avi Arad who used to run Marvel Comics and who does the Spider-Man movies, with Amy Pascal, the head of Sony, and said, “What do you think? Would you like to try to create a really smart, interesting, intense franchise based on this game?” And I said yeah, let me check it out.

My son plays most of the games in our house, and I will play them with him but I’m not hardcore. I’m not going to present myself as hardcore. But I played the game a bunch of times and I also read as much as I could about the game and I met the game’s creator, Amy Hennig, who’s really cool. I started to brew together what I thought could be a really cool idea that I’d never seen in a film before…Really intense action and really intense family dynamics on a global stage. To grow a game into a movie is an interesting proposition because a game is a very different experience than a movie. You guys are playing the game, and it’s about playing the game. It’s not about a narrative embracing you emotionally. You know what I’m saying? So, I want to create a world that is worthy of a really great film that people want to watch and rewatch, so that’s what I’m working on right now.

My last question is, I don’t know if you’ve read on the interwebs but a lot of people have made a number of suggestions as to how one should go about making an Uncharted game. I wonder if you have any reaction to that, or do you even know what I’m talking about to begin with?

Well I’ve had people come up to me after screenings and pitch people they think should play the roles and I think we’ve seen that before with movies like Interview with the Vampire where there was a lot of fans of Anne Rice’s book and there were a lot of strong opinions about how to make it.

As far as I’m concerned, I’m very respectful as far as the core content and sprit of the game, but beyond that it’s my job as a filmmaker to make what I think is going to be an amazing movie. People have to trust that and let that go, I think. There’s not a bunch of movies you can point to that are made from games that are amazing movies, that stand up to time as a franchise or as [individual films]. I personally think it’s really cool when you see that someone like Darren Aronofsky is going to make an X-Men movie or to get someone such as myself to make this picture. You can be guaranteed that it’s going to be real, it’s going to be raw, it’s going to be intense, it’s going to be original, and it’s going to be propulsive. And those are all the things that I want when I go to watch a movie like that.

Well David O. Russell it’s been an honor to speak with you today. Thanks so much for joining us on the Slashfilmcast and thank you for taking time to answer our questions and those of our readers and listeners.

Thank you David for having me. Rock on and I’ll be talking to you soon I hope.

Good luck at the Oscars this year.

Thank you. We’ll need it!

personal finances help

A federal tax lien gives the IRS the right to make a legal claim against a taxpayer's property for the amount of an unpaid tax debt. An IRS lien can knock as much as 100 points off an individual's credit rating or decimate a business's ability to make its payroll or apply for credit. When a lien is filed, the IRS can freeze all bank accounts and instruct anyone that owes money to the taxpayer or business to make all payments directly to the IRS until the debt is paid off.

Lien filings have surged over the last decade, leaving more and more taxpayers to face an IRS nightmare. IRS liens have jumped from 168,000 filed in 1999 to a whopping 1.1 million filed last year.

The Changes

According to the IRS, new changes may decrease the number of liens and lessen the negative impact on taxpayers. The changes include:
  • Significantly increasing the general threshold for liens from $5,000 in unpaid taxes to $10,000.
  • Making it easier for taxpayers to obtain lien withdrawals after paying a tax bill.
  • Withdrawing liens, in most cases, when a taxpayer enters into a Direct Debit Installment Agreement.
  • Creating easier access to those payment agreements for more struggling small businesses.
  • Expanding a streamlined "Offer in Compromise" program to help more taxpayers settle their tax debts.
"These steps are in the best interest of both taxpayers and the tax system," said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman in a statement Thursday. "People will have a better chance to stay current on their taxes and keep their financial house in order. We all benefit if that happens."

Avoiding a Lien

But don't relax too soon. While the IRS touts the policy changes as a way to help debt-deluged taxpayers get back on their feet, taxpayer advocates say the only way to get real relief from an IRS lien is to avoid having one filed against you in the first place.

For one thing, although the IRS has eased the rules under which it will now file a lien, that doesn't mean it will relax the aggressive attempts to collect on its debts. In fact, the relaxed rules mean the IRS is likely to be less sympathetic to those who do not quickly settle their debt or enter into an agreement to do so.

The new policy will no doubt allow the IRS to concentrate on placing liens on taxpayers with larger debts as opposed to pursuing thousands of time-consuming enforcement actions against individuals who owe small amounts. The new changes give taxpayers a few more opportunities to stay away from the most devastating IRS enforcement actions.

Still, it helps to be prepared. "If you haven't filed in a while, and you are not prepared to pay back taxes in full when you file, it is generally a good idea to have a representative to help you navigate through the process," says Patrick Cox, CEO of tax advisory firm, TaxMasters (TAXS). "If you have two or three years of returns, you probably want to work with someone who has expertise in this area."

Coping with a Lien

In case you are hit with an IRS enforcement action, Cox recommends having a tax representation firm contact the IRS on your behalf to find out why the action is being sought, determine your financial capacity to reach a settlement, determine your options and then advise you on what your best options might be.

For example, Cox said many people don't know that the IRS can't take actions that prevent you from paying your mortgage. Tax professionals at firms like TaxMasters or J.K. Harris & Co. are aware of those rules and can help make sure that you enter into an agreement that allows you to pay both the IRS and your bills.

"When the IRS calls on you and you don't have a representative, they take the position that you know as much about taxes as they do," Cox says. "They assume that you know all of your options and they assume that whatever you agree to, you are doing so because you want to."

Consumers can find all the information they need to prepare for and respond to an IRS lien on the IRS website. However, the information is not easy to decipher and it may take days of study to truly understand your rights and determine all of your best options.

"If you don't know to ask for something, you are probably not going to be told that there is an option available," Cox says.

Making Money Opportunities

On Monday night, I watched my initially, The Last Phrase host Lawrence O’Donnell.
When O’Donnell laudably experimented with to focus the audience’s awareness onand hopefully previous, Charlie Sheen trainwreck interview, courtesy of the tragic undertow that threatens to pull Sheen beneath for wonderful, I was overtaken, not through the pulling on the thread, in addition to the voracious audience he serves. It did not make me depressing, it manufactured me angry.

When it comes to celebrities, we can be considered a heartless country, basking within their misfortunes like nude sunbathers at Schadenfreude Beach. The impulse is understandable, to some degree. It can be grating to listen to complaints from persons who benefit from privileges that most of us can’t even think about. In the event you can’t muster up some compassion for Charlie Sheen, who can make far more cash for any day’s operate than the majority of us will make in the decade’s time, I guess I cannot blame you.

Along with the fast speed of occasions on the web as well as the advice revolution sparked by the World wide web, it’s particularly simple for your know-how marketplace to assume it’s exclusive: often breaking new ground and undertaking things that no person has ever done before.

But you can get other types of corporation which have currently undergone a lot of the exact same radical shifts, and also have just as excellent a stake while in the long term.

Get healthcare, for instance.

We sometimes presume of it being a huge, lumbering beast, but in reality, medication has undergone a series of revolutions in the previous 200 years which might be at the least equal to all those we see in technologies and info.

Much less understandable, but even now within just the norms of human nature, is the impulse to rubberneck, to slow down and consider the carnage of Charlie spectacle of Sheen’s unraveling, but of the blithe interviewer Sheen’s daily life as we pass it inside proper lane of our daily lives. To become straightforward, it could possibly be challenging for customers to discern the big difference amongst a run-of-the-mill attention whore, and an honest-to-goodness, circling the drain tragedy-to-be. On its personal merits, a quote like “I Am On the Drug. It is Termed Charlie Sheen” is sheer genius, and we can’t all be expected to get the full measure of someone’s existence each time we hear a thing humorous.

Extremely fast forward to 2011 and I am wanting to examine usually means of being a little more business-like about my hobbies (typically new music). Through the conclude of January I had manned up and started to advertise my blogs. I had created a number of totally different weblogs, which had been contributed to by good friends and colleagues. I promoted these actions through Facebook and Twitter.

2nd: the little abomination the Gang of Five about the Supream Court gave us a yr or so back (Citizens Inebriated) in fact contains just a little bouncing betty of its personal that could very perfectly go off from the faces of Govs Wanker, Sacitch, Krysty, and J.O. Daniels. Because this ruling extended the idea of “personhood” to equally companies and unions, to test to deny them any appropriate to operate inside of the legal framework that they were organized underneath deprives these “persons” on the freedoms of speech, association and movement. Which means (as soon as again, quoting law school trained relatives) that both the courts really have to uphold these rights for that unions (as particular person “persons” as assured from the Federal (and most state) constitutions, or they've to declare that these attempts at stripping or limiting union rights ought to utilize to important companies, also.

Thought the ZH famiglia would enjoy this comment from my old friend Sol Sanders, who has been watching China long enough to actually remember Mao. I read Chinese history as an undergrad and worked as a banker in the semi cap equipment market, which is now dominated by Asian nations.  But the export market that China and its neighbors depend upon has never come back.  Is China the next Egypt?  A version of this column is scheduled for publication in The Washington Times, Monday, Feb. 14, 2011.  -- Chris

Follow the Money No. 53:  Rolling the dice in China

By Sol Sanders <solsanders@cox.net>

When scientists get further along with epigenetics, they may discover the Chinese have two unique DNA: a gambling gene, and another for hospitality. The first, of course, explains why Macau is odds-on favorite for replacing Vegas as No. 1 world gambling champion. The second suggests why few escape the lure of a Chinese campaign to win visitors’ hearts and minds.

Looking at a new determined shift in Beijing’s economic strategy, one has to chalk it up to that gambling gene. Intoxicated with turning into “the world’s factory”, Beijing plans to sail right past their successful collaborative development with foreign multinationals. Its new strategy literally amends Maximal Leader Deng Hsiao-ping’s dying instructions two decades ago to hide their capacities until they had achieved his four modernizations.

One can only chalk up Western businessmen naiveté to that second suspected Chinese gene, the ability to vamp any visitor. Of course, Frederick Engels, Karl Marx’s more literary companion, explained it all more than a century ago. He foresaw that on the way to the gallows, the capitalists’ greed would drive them to compete with one another to sell the rope to their executioners.

From mid-summer last year Chinese authorities – as a muddled but highly informative U.S. Chamber of Commerce report concludes – shifted from defense to offense. Years of studying their acknowledged total dependence on foreign technology has culminated in proposing 16 new megaprojects. With them they aim:

1] To provide new opportunities for stealing foreign technology. Now, before any technology can be introduced into China, it must be intensely “studied” -- in fact, stolen even before it enters the market. Another is increased allocation of “patents” to Chinese firms with virtually no verification, making it virtually impossible to pursue legal indemnification for losses.

2] To restore the primacy of the SOEs, the state-owned enterprises, those giant behemoths notorious for their inefficiency and corruption but powerful political entities. Massive funds [$25 billion] -- out of the huge 2008 stimulus package, originally aimed at warding off contagion from the world financial crisis – have been allocated to the SOEs to produce “indigenous innovation”

3] To continue to ensnare foreign companies, Beijing will suggest in return for continued tech transfers, they will get a share of the growing Chinese markets. They will also be offered participation in new technologies in China using government funds. But increasingly “import substitution”, that protectionist policy which crippled much of the third world before “globalization” became fashionable, is government policy.

Beijing’s new turn is loaded with risk. The history of Chinese innovation during the current boom is miserable. Eighty percent of China’s major firms do not have R&D at all.  One reason may be it has been so easy to rent or steal needed foreign technologies. But there may be even more important – if difficult to evaluate – cultural factors.

Although China was historically leader in basic scientific development, simply said, the Europeans picked up on those breakthroughs to initiate the industrial revolution leaving China behind. Why? The answer to this question is perennial among scholars. One answer lies in China’s intense bureaucratization, in part arising from the need for huge collective enterprises – largely for water control. Another, of course, is Chinese learning has always put the emphasis on rote memorization and an inordinate, even religious, respect and adherence to what has gone before. It may be no accident, as the Communists used to say, now bereft of its Marxist-Leninist-Maoist dogma Beijing is turning back to Confucianism. [A statue of Confucius was recently installed in Tien An Mien square alongside a huge portrait of his greatest adversary, Mao Tse-tung.] With its emphasis on ritual, Confucianism represents the antithesis to the restless European [Greek] mind. An even greater threat to the new effort to produce originality may be the all pervasive corruption permeating Chinese life today which means vast sums promised R&D will go astray.

China is also taking other risks. Despite an intense campaign, Beijing has not been able to lure home more than a few prominent scholars among more than 62,000 Chinese in the U.S., many in technological research. With ties in both cultures, they have been critical to transferring technology. The new Beijing strategy may jeopardize that relationship as American business, reluctantly, and the U.S. government becomes increasingly cautious about China deals.

True, economic development in East Asia was always full of warfare over intellectual property. Japan, Taiwan and South Korea have been major culprits. But the Chinese pour salt in the wound by offering products overseas based on stolen technology. Thus California’s former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was talking to the Chinese about proposed federally subsidized high-speed rail based on their theft from three foreign companies that had cooperated in creating them in China. At the moment, Washington is grappling with the proposed purchase by Huawei, a Chinese entity with military connections, of an American IT company with the Pentagon as a client.

Beijing’s gamble if successful would insure continued giant leaps forward but like Mao’s infamous economic plays, this one could prove catastrophic.

Not long ago, I saw a news item on ESPN that really drives home the perils of alumni development in college sports.

The top donor for the University of Connecticut’s football program is apparently displeased with the hiring of their new football coach and wants their $3M donation back.

The rich individual previously decided to “donate” a large sum of money to this program, and because of that, he feels he has the right to influence what decisions the program makes. Look at these quotes from the donor:

  • Burton called the situation “a slap in the face and embarrassment to my family,” and said he planned “to let the correct people know that you did not listen to your number one football donor.”

  • “We want our money and respect back.”

  • Although he was not seeking veto power in the hiring, he “earned my voice on this subject” as the program’s top donor.

  • “You are not qualified to be a Division I AD and I would have fired you a long time ago. You do not have the skills to manage and cultivate new donors.”

This person does not work for the university or the athletic program in any capacity, yet because he wrote the biggest check, he feels that he has the power to impact school decisions. In this case, he’s angry that his opinion was ignored, but I’m sure that other schools in similar situations would actually let the donor’s opinion impact their decision. The scary thing is that I don’t know which is worse.

My first experience working in sports was with a college athletics department, working under the Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Revenue Generation. I was very fortunate that this school had a progressive marketing department where I was able to manage a CRM system, oversee digital and email marketing efforts, and dive in to some very interesting analytical projects and decision making. To this day, I am very thankful for that experience.

However, once I had finished up my year-long fellowship, I decided that college athletics wasn’t for me, and that was for one primary reason – development (the arm of the athletic department that handles alumni donations). I had the feeling that to really succeed within a major Division I athletic program, you needed to be involved in getting those rich alumni to donate more and more money. Budgets were always tight, and getting that donor money directly into the hands of the athletics program was crucial. This aspect of the job did not appeal to me, so I focused my efforts on professional sports opportunities.

This situation doesn’t exist with professional sports teams, If a company is paying that type of money, it’s for something very specific (suites, sponsorships, media, etc.) and that purchase does not include the ability to influence team operational decisions. In this particular case, the donor ended up ultimately retracting his statements, but the threat for the school was very real.

This will always be a unique aspect of college athletics, and I know that a lot of people in alumni development enjoy the challenge. It is a complicated blend of marketing, customer service, public relations and fundraising. But when I see a story like this, it reminds me about why I decided college athletics wasn’t the right spot for me.

Making Money on Line

Tyler Cowen read Dean Baker's take on state pensions and says he prefers Josh Barro's more alarmed assessment. I read Barro's piece and was surprised to find that it agreed, in many respects, with Baker's piece, though the two articles had different emphases and different prescriptions.

In particular, they agree that the central question afflicting pension plans is the returns they'll see in coming years. Barro argues that the commonly quoted figures "understate the cost of benefits to be paid in the future by counting on high investment returns that may not materialize," while Baker argues that the gigantic shortfalls that some observers are now estimating are overstated and that pension funds can "reasonably assume" returns in the 7 percent range. It's worth noting that before the financial crisis, Baker was trying to sound the alarm about pension funds using overly rosy estimations of future returns, so it's difficult to accuse him of being overly bullish. That said, read David Leonhardt making the case for more pessimism on future returns.

The major disagreement comes over the question of what to do next. Barro argues that existing pension promises should be honored. "Short of defaulting on these debts," he writes, "the only way states can eliminate unfunded pension liabilities is to fund them." But going forward, he'd like to see states move to 401(k)-style programs, as that protects taxpayers from having to shell out more cash during economic downturns. Under the current system, he says, "state governments are long in the stock market on taxpayers’ behalf."

Baker strongly disagrees. He argues that the point of an actor such as the state, at least when it comes to pension policy, is that it has a long time horizon and so can ignore cyclical ups and downs in the stock market. "In principle," he writes, "state and local governments will exist into perpetuity, so a period in which the market is depressed need not be of great consequence." Add in, as Teresa Ghilarducci does, that "401(k) management and investment fees are three times higher" than traditional pension plans and "professionals who manage money in pooled pension funds usually get higher returns than workers who manage their own 401(k) accounts," and it's hard to argue that defined benefit plans should be done away with for states, though it's not hard to argue that they should be funded honestly and based on realistic projections for eventual returns. Felix Salmon agrees.

But the bottom line is that the correct questions to ask about pension plans are: 1) Are they estimating a realistic rate of return going forward? 2) If so, are they sufficiently funded? And 3) If not, what should be done? I think there's less disagreement about the underlying nature of the problem here than some people might think. The disagreements, rather, are about the country's likely economic performance going forward (as that will ultimately decide returns) and what our state pension system should look like in general.

One of the prime topics of conversation during NBA All Star Weekend is the league’s labor agreement or lack thereof.

The league is enjoying an unprecedented level of popularity and its future is bright. Midway through the 2010-11 season, the league's talent level is deeper than ever and many of the those talented players are just beginning their careers. The NBA’s marketing machine is world class and interest in the league is at an all-time high.

However its road to success is approaching a giant pothole – otherwise known as its next labor agreement — and to me we’re entering a fascinating point in league history.

Forbes Magazine has reported that 12 of the 30 NBA teams lost money last season. And NBA Commissioner David Stern, several weeks back, claimed that league owners were projecting a cumulative loss this season of approximately 350 million dollars.

Stern has declared that the current labor situation is untenable because the players are being paid too much guaranteed money. The players for their part are digging in and this labor dispute shows few if any signs of getting resolved anytime soon.

There is also one glaring problem that I personally feel the NBA needs to fix because, if you ask me, it’s the one negative the league has faced for as long as Stern has been commissioner. Each season, too many teams have zero chance of making the playoffs.

Let’s face it, if you’re a fan of the Timberwolves, Wizards, Nets and a bunch of other teams, you’re basically watching games to see the opposing team because your team’s best chance to improve is to lose as many games as possible, get a high lottery draft pick and then have the ping pong balls fall the right way on lottery night. Luck plays too big a role in who’s good and who’s not.
