Ryan Gavin and Dean Hachamovitch, Marketing Guy and Engineer, respectively, for Internet Explorer, have announced that the final build and release of Internet Explorer 9 will indeed be at the party they’re throwing at South by Southwest in Texas on March 14th, 2011. They’ve decided to first announce this to their very favorite community at Channel9, a bunch of developers who are in love with the internet platform, and they’ve spoken here in a video at length what the browser will be able to do.

This browser has been in production for approximately a year, and now they’re going to release it, thanking profusely the community of developers who have stepped up to help them in making this a platform that has a chance at competing with the rest of the powerhouse browsers out in the market today. As you know, Internet Explorer

Hachamovitch will be doing a keynote at MIX 10 as well, showing off how the platform is rolling out, as a sort of “look what we did in a year” sort of thing. These two fellas sitting on the couch are super excited about this rollout and after saying what they came to say, they made sure to prompt Channel9 for what they call an “uncomfortable question.” What Channel9 decided to ask about was HTML5, to which they reply “WE’RE FOR IT!”

Of course the developer community knows this already, so the question is pressed, beyond what HTML5 can do for the everyday user, what does IE9 offer the fringe users who want features that not everyone will use? Hachamovitch replies with a sort of well, we DO do that, we’ve implemented things like Navigation Timing which “got 0% usage on the web,” he then going on to say that they’ve added items that don’t just come from developers who request things, they’ve essentially come up with elements that they and people at Yahoo, Google, and etc have spoken about behind the scenes, bringing these “fringe” features into IE9 at launch.

Essentially what they’re speaking about in this video and what will be coming with Internet Explorer 9 is depth as well as quality implementation of features. We’re hoping for the best!

For Apple, the mobile market is a cash cow. The company’s iPhone and iPad are proving to be the top mobile companions for people around the globe. Apple has sold over 100 million iPhones. Its iPad sales have hit 15 million. The company understands the mobile market and it knows how to capitalize on it.

But what about the living room? It has the Apple TV, sure, and the Mac mini is often times connected to an HDTV, but what else has Apple done to push the envelope in the living room? It still hasn’t launched the long-rumored television we keep hearing about, and it seems that offering a game console — a hope for many Apple fans over the past few years — won’t happen.

I fully realize that Apple can’t be everything to every customer. It delivers computers, smartphones, tablets, personal media players, two operating systems, wireless routers, and much more. But I also realize that Apple is an entertainment company. It’s about trying to give people more opportunity to enjoy their lives through technology. And it would only make sense if it doubled down on the living room.

Let’s turn our attention to the Apple TV for a minute.

Prior to its announcement in September, rumors were running rampant over what the former “hobby” would offer. Folks thought it would deliver gaming, interface with DVRs, include Apple’s App Store, and much more. They thought it would be a sizable update over its predecessor.

Instead, Apple offered a stripped-down alternative.

The second-generation Apple TV comes with the ability for users to stream Netflix content. It has Flickr and Internet radio. And it allows users to stream their music over their home network to their televisions. It offers movies and television shows, as well, but most would agree that it’s slim pickings for now.

At that event in September, Steve Jobs said that Apple’s research showed customers didn’t want everything a company could pile into a device. They simply want the ability to consume the content they enjoy without the fuss that might come along with something like Google TV-based devices.

But by delivering the bare minimum, Apple did itself no favors. The company took the easy way out and pretended like it no longer views the living room as a hobby. The only issue is, the Apple TV is still a hobby. It’s a device that lacks all the functionality we’ve come to expect from Apple — a company that typically prides itself on offering the best value for the cash. And at least so far, it leaves me wanting more.

So, what am I looking for? I want to see Apple improve the Apple TV by bringing its App Store to the platform. I’d also like to see some kind of gaming component come to the device, either through the App Store or as part of a more-capable platform.

And perhaps most importantly, I’d like to see Apple think beyond its set-top box and deliver products that try something new. I’m not sold on the possibility of Apple offering a groundbreaking television, but if it can surprise me, I’m all for it.

Simply put, I’m looking for Apple to be Apple. Right now, it’s just like every other company in the living room; it’s content to have a presence but not dominate.

That needs to end.

No single company can stake claim to the living room right now. Steve Jobs just needs to take advantage of that void and do something special.

But first, he needs to take the living room — and its revenue potential — seriously.

Editor’s Note: Jim Dalrymple has been writing about Apple for more than 15 years. You can follow him on Twitter @jdalrymple and on his Web site at The Loop.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday introduced the iPad 2 at a special event in San Francisco, taking even more momentum away from its competitors.

I’ve had a lot of people in the last 24 hours tell me that the iPad 2 isn’t as revolutionary as the first generation device. Yes, that’s true. But not every device a company releases has to be or can be revolutionary.

Apple has released three revolutionary products in the last decade alone: iPod, iPhone and iPad. I really can’t think of any products from Apple’s competitors that fit in the revolutionary category in that same time period.

People also said that Apple wasn’t very forthcoming with the specs of the iPad 2. Again, that’s true, but there’s a good reason for that—nobody cares.

Well, some people care. Those of us who are geeks care about specs. However, have you ever noticed that when you sit with your non-geek friends and start listing off specs their eyes glaze over and they rest their chin in their hand.

That’s because they couldn’t care less.

The iPad 2 is no slouch either. It lost one-third of the thickness of the previous generation, and therefore it is one-third less than the size of the iPad competitors too. It also has new technologies like a gyro built-in that will launch another round of cool apps.

Yesterday’s iPad 2 announcement wasn’t about the geeks—it was about all the other people who will buy an iPad. What those people want to know is “what can I do with it?”

If it fits into their lifestyle, most people are good with that. Apple showed many ways how the iPad 2 can fit into your lifestyle.

From the very beginning, Apple was very smart with how it marketed the iPad. The first thing it did was get the device into businesses and promote the fact that it could be used to get work done. And it was quite successful with that.

In an analyst call in October 2010, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the iPad was already being used in 65 percent of Fortune 100 companies. That was four months ago and the iPad has grown since then, so we can only imagine where that number is now.

This strategy allowed Apple to do two things. If it came out with the iPad and pushed the gaming capabilities of the device, the business world would have looked at it as a toy. That would have certainly meant slower adoption. It also allowed them to work on some consumer software, two of which we saw yesterday.

In addition to the iPad 2, Jobs also unveiled iMovie and GarageBand for the iPad. This is what people want to know about—what can I do with the iPad that’s exciting and new.

Obviously, creating movies and being able to edit and share them with friends and family is a very popular thing to do these days. iMovie makes that easy.

Creating music, whether a novice or pro is also a cool thing to do. GarageBand is a great app to get that done and you can move your projects to your Mac and continue working on them.

It’s not just about the hardware. Apple delivers the whole experience that nobody else can. Jobs said yesterday that there are 65,000 apps on its App Store specifically designed for the iPad. That’s a lot of things you can do.

If you think Apple’s competitors are jumping for joy because the iPad 2 isn’t revolutionary, I believe you are wrong. I think they’re scared. Yesterday, they figured out Apple’s strategy too, but a little too late.

Help Making Money

Over the next year or two, social commerce will disrupt e-commerce and social media, effectively turning our social interactions into commercial transactions. So how will this happen and where is the disruption taking place?

A Check-In Economy

You’re walking down the street staring at your phone and it’s telling you what deals are nearby. Perhaps not the best of visions but it’s the ecosystem that currently exists around check-in services like Foursquare and Facebook Places. The features are great, but staring at your phone could result into you running into something or even something running into you. It’s not elegant. The result has been an experience based on check-ins that take place when the consumer arrives at a venue.

Foursquare and Facebook both provide platforms that enable businesses to present deals or offers to visitors, in addition to rewarding visitors for repeat business. It’s an interesting business model and so far it appears to be having decent success. However, as deals disappear and users get tired of checking in, one has to wonder if this is truly the holy grail of social media marketing. If you want to know my opinion: it’s not. Check-ins are an early phase (reviews on Yelp were probably first) in a long shift which will completely disrupt commerce as we know it.

Will normal commerce continue to exist once social commerce takes hold? Definitely! However, a large portion of commerce will become much more integrated with our existing communication.

The Main Players

The goal for any business is to get more customers and more transactions (check-outs) and any new form of commerce will have to accomplish two things: It will need to empower the consumer and help transactions become frictionless. So if we examine all existing solutions through this lens, we should be able to determine how disruptive they truly are. Let’s take a look at a few.

Yelp

Yelp is one of the earliest innovators in the social commerce space. The site has empowered consumers through the amplification of their voices. Suddenly any consumer could instantly have a large (and targeted) audience of potential customers for the business they’re reviewing. Getting bad service? Try threatening the hostess or waiter with a bad Yelp review and see what they do. On a scale of one to ten, Yelp deserves a rating of ten when it comes to empowering the consumer.

As for transaction friction, Yelp has simply integrated with Open Table in order to make reservations easier. That’s about all the site has right now as far as I know, so I’d have to rate them a three on the empowerment scale.

Groupon & LivingSocial

The other major disruptors to online commerce lately have been Groupon and LivingSocial. So far though there’s very little that’s social about these services aside from them making it possible for users to share deals with others. That capability alone has helped grow these two companies to their current values in the billions. The two companies have empowered consumers through the power of numbers.

Consumers get a discounted price for a product or service, and the business gets a massive flood of new customers. While this strategy is rapidly becoming blemished with consumer and business complaints, it has proven to be extremely profitable. Shoppers also love getting a deal so it’s a win-win most of the time. As such, we’d rank these companies relatively high, like a seven, on the empowerment scale, due to the value provided.

However, the transaction isn’t exactly frictionless. After you make a purchase, you often need to go through a scheduling process, depending on the business. Given that the Groupon and LivingSocial effect can be as overwhelming as the Oprah effect, many businesses find it hard to respond to all the demand. While this model will become more integrated overtime, there hasn’t been a removal of friction for the most part, so we’ll score both companies a one on the frictionless scale.

Facebook Places And Foursquare

Facebook and Foursquare are both interesting in their approach to location and empowering the consumer. With Facebook, users could already complain to their friends. Foursquare, however, required the re-creation of a user’s social graph in order to accomplish the same thing. Ultimately, the business value of Facebook Places and Foursquare are a bit more abstract, giving businesses the ability to reward consumers for various behaviors within a given venue.

The existing rewards programs are reminiscent of traditional coupons, making them valuable for a segment of the population. While I’ve heard people extoll the values of creating a Place on Facebook or managing a venue on Foursquare, the return on investment has yet to prove itself.

For Facebook, the value presented by tracking user check-ins is improved advertising, and Deals appears to be more of an afterthought for the company, although that could change in the future. For Foursquare, the value surrounds rewarding consumers for frequenting a business.

Ultimately, I don’t find either of these products to be extremely empowering for the shopper.  The main reason is that once the consumer checks in, they aren’t as likely to change their decision to shop there. Contrast that with Yelp, where a bad review can result in a lost customer. As such, I’m ranking Facebook Places and Foursquare a three on the empowerment scale and a one on the frictionless transaction scale.

While I think both products will evolve over time, this space is still extremely nascent.

The Future

The convergence of local, mobile, and social (or “SoLoMo” as John Doerr calls it) is about to generate a tidal wave of change and we stand on the cusp of it. While I could wax poetic about the future of this space, I’ll simply say that the overall shopping experience will become much more social for a large percentage of transactions. If you think about all the purchases that involve social experiences (movies, concerts, travel, etc), these spaces are only beginning to get disrupted.

While the experiences are social, right now the transactions are not. So far the only social shopping experiences which exist today either provide basic integration with Facebook, sidebar chat with friends during the shopping experience, or other basic features. Over the next one to two years, we will see a wave of innovation in the social commerce space and it won’t be like the forms of interactions we have on the web; they will be completely different. While it’s easy to call the Groupons of the world overvalued, this is a trillion dollar market that is just beginning to unfold.

Cute kittens and toddlers may be YouTube’s bread and butter, but Google’s video portal needs more than that to encroach on the goliath that is cable TV. But instead of shelling out for the rights to premium content from cable networks, YouTube is hoping it can nudge its existing community toward making high quality videos.

Today the company has confirmed that it has acquired Next New Networks, a firm founded in 2007 that focuses on producing high quality original video content for the web. Alongside the news, YouTube is announcing ‘YouTube Next’, a team of experts (made up by many of the NNN team, no doubt) who are setting out to “supercharge creator development and accelerate partner growth and success”. In other words, YouTube is going to give certain partners access to a team of experts that can hopefully help them produce better content. YouTube’s pending acquisition of Next New Networks was first reported by the New York Times in December.

From the YouTube blog:

In fact, the number of partners making over $1,000 a month is up 300% since the beginning of 2010 and we now have hundreds of partners making six figures a year. But frankly, “hundreds” making a living on YouTube isn’t enough and in 2011 we know we can and should do more to help our partners grow.

The YouTube Next initiative sounds good on paper, but it’s not really clear how YouTube is going to be able to scale the program to make it useful to more than “hundreds” of partners.

Last year YouTube launched a Partner Grants Program that allows promising content creators to receive an advance on their future ad revenue so that they can invest in making videos with higher production values. And it gave a $1,000 credit to 500 partners late last year to buy new video equipment.

But both of those programs revolved around money, which scales. This YouTube Next team is about expertise — YouTube will be contacting partners that it believes could use some help, and will send in its team of experts who can offer tips on YouTube’s platform and the kind of content that tends to do well online. This training will be free, but, again, only select content partners will get access to it.

YouTube says that Next team will be global, but it isn’t saying how many people will be involved. Beyond this partner training, it sounds like YouTube will be launching further grant programs under its Next brand.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.

There are lots of roofers available, but the ones who'll perform a congrats for a reasonable cost are not often simple to find. If you're in the market for the contractor, make use of the tips beneath for interviewing and employing the right one.

Interview and Consultation

Karma Foley Interview by kino-eye

Most roofing companies provide free consultations. This is especially essential, because it gives them an opportunity to assess exactly what your roof needs, and it gives you a chance to assess them. As with all businesses, trust your intuition concerning the individuals you allow upward onto your roofing. No matter exactly how great the contractor's reputation or recommendation, he or she should begin by presenting a person having a business greeting card. If the service provider occurs searching and talking in an unprofessional manner, most likely the task he's going to perform may also be unprofessional. This isn't to say that you should anticipate companies to arrive in suits. They is going to be climbing on your roofing, so the majority of will be dressed up in jeans as well as work boots or even sneakers. If the service provider appears to be more interested in talking on his mobile phone while on your roof compared to he is in analyzing your roof's needs, which may be another sign that he is not really the one to do the job. For your lawful safety, make sure that the contractor has sufficient legal responsibility insurance.

Roofing Assessment

-Roof- by Vít Hassan

Anticipate that the contractor will be rising in your roof. Actually, any kind of contractor who not need to go up in your roofing to judge the problem ought to be immediately discounted. Those who're seriously interested in their own work may possibly create a drawing of the roof's surface as well as mark problem areas onto it because they undergo their evaluation, or even they will consider pictures or even video clip from the surface area while they're available online for. This is a very important step, because it enables you to see just what the problems are and understand how they'll be fixed.

Estimation

Sonnar 180 TEST (180mm + full resolution crop) 04.2008 by zgodzinski

The next step will be the created estimate. The service provider will take away his calculator and are available up with a written estimate. Some contractors goes out to their own truck or even truck and write up the actual suggestion, while some will crunch the numbers to do the job in front of you. Once you are because of the suggestion, ensure that you understand which products will be utilized, just how long the task will take and if you will find any additional or hidden expenses that may arise during the repair from the roofing. The contractor will be able to solution all of these questions effortlessly and forewarn a person of any extra expenses that might be sustained if the roof's integrity be damaged within.

After you have obtained several written estimations from roofing companies, assess exactly what each organization or contractor is willing to provide for that price. Do not always low cost the greatest bet, simply because occasionally the highest bid will in reality be the contractor who does the job properly. Also, be skeptical associated with prices for bids which are significantly less than others. They may be utilizing inferior products or perhaps be untruthful about the possibility of concealed costs. Above all, believe in intuition and go with the actual service provider who makes you feel most comfy about giving over your money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

If it were actually in doubt, information acquired through the whistleblower website, Wikileaks, has confirmed Chinese language federal government worries more than it's ongoing charge of the region this phone calls Xinjiang, also is referred to as East Turkestan. The actual leaked out cables from Ough.S. diplomats demonstrate the actual degree to which Chinese authorities attempt to convince governments globally to consider it's stance on problems affecting Uyghurs. The cables also display the actual United States' issues and sights concerning the ongoing repressive measures in the area.

The majority of lighting of Chinese language government stress are the wires directed to Chinese frustration, or the specter of Chinese ire, within the release of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to third nations. A Dec Twenty nine, 08 cable applies how Chinese Assistant International Reverend Liu Jieyi met with the Ough.Utes. Ambassador to The far east to voice Beijing's powerful competitors associated with launch in order to any kind of country other than The far east, and that when the U.S. do certainly accede to this ask for it would "avoid injury to bilateral relationships and also to cooperation ‘in essential areas'". Furthermore, the Feb 2009 cable explains how the Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded as the feasible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees because "an unfavorable behave toward us" and a "slap in the face". The U.S. federal government stood company in not releasing the detainees in order to China illustrates the degree of the politicized character of the Chinese language judicial program. Genuine issues over terrorism are easy to understand, but in the Ough.S. government's observe the detainees might probably encounter do-it-yourself torture as well as delivery if they returned in order to The far east

Chinese government pressure in regard to the Uyghur Guantánamo detainees was not just put on the actual U.S. government, but additionally to Brand new Zealand along with a number of Western government authorities which were considering resettlement. Albania, Germany as well as Finland, in addition to Eu member says just about all appear to have paid for the brunt of Chinese language government disappointment. Regarding Germany, that was initially willing to consider two Uyghurs upon purely relief reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo instances had been less preferable to other detainees due to the unwanted effects taking Uyghurs might have on relations with China. The May Eight, 2009 cable television relates how "German Ambassador Erina Schaefer reported that Indonesia experienced knowledgeable The far east from the U.Utes. ask for to accept a few Uighur detainees kept at Guantánamo and had already been subsequently cautioned by The far east associated with ‘a large load upon bilateral relations' if Germany were to accept any kind of detainees".

The actual diplomatic cables additionally discuss the actual unrest in Urumchi, the local capital, within July '09. The This summer 13, 2009 cable television talking about mass occurrences in China states:

"Ethnic riots such as those in Xinjiang This summer 5-7 and in Tibet in March of 2008 differ substantially in origin and character from mass occurrences, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized to PolOff [Political Officer] upon XXXXXXXXXXXX. Each present serious trouble for the Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX stated, however the Celebration leadership wouldn't wait to open fireplace on Uighurs or Tibetans if they considered this necessary to recover order. Bulk incidents present a different type of risk, he explained, as the management is ‘afraid' to fire on Han rioters with regard to anxiety about causing massive public outrage that will change against the Celebration."

This is a relaxing opinion, especially when one views the evidence presented by 50 percent reviews launched this season through the Uyghur Individual Rights Task (UHRP) and Amnesty Worldwide that fine detail eyewitness accounts of the utilization of lethal live fire against Uyghur protestors within July 2009. Additionally, the declaration which fire wouldn't be deployed against Han Chinese language protestors offers resonances for that various strategy used through Chinese language security causes in Urumchi to Han Chinese language protests in September '09. Throughout those direct orders, then Party Secretary, Wang Lequan, addressed demonstrators, who experienced required that he inform them regarding federal government reactions in order to security concerns. An identical request to satisfy using the Celebration Assistant by Uyghur demonstrators in This summer wasn't fulfilled.

The broader consequences of the unrest also saw a brief dialogue about the impact it would possess upon Iran-China relations, as well as on relations along with Australia following World Uyghur Our elected representatives Leader, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, spoke in the Nationwide Push Club in Canberra in July '09. In the latter situation, the Chinese government "privately warn[ed] a major Aussie bank that sponsors the nation's Push Membership to make use of it's influence to bar the Kadeer speech there".

The U . s . States' concerns concerning the scenario in the Uyghur region are available through in the wires. Inside a dialogue on policy path in Tibet, Ough.Utes. authorities explain that it will end up being impossible for Chinese leaders to consider a softer collection "if they appear like they are doing so under international pressure". The actual cable out dated 04 Sixteen, 08, one month after the outbreak of unrest within Tibetan areas, also relayed the declaration "that household stability remains the leadership's top priority most of all, which means there'll ‘almost surely' be absolutely no rest from the present hard line on Tibet or perhaps in locations such as Xinjiang." The information contained in the cable television also sheds light on the severe level of sensitivity with which the Chinese federal government sights territorial integrity, and also the possible drip over of unrest through Tibet.

The chance of solutions to tensions in Tibet and Xinjiang as a result of municipal culture tend to be discussed inside a Feb Twenty-four, 2008 cable. Whilst suggesting that China's economic achievement will increase its resistance to democratic change, the cable television also talks about exactly how Chinese language leaders begin to see the effectiveness associated with "a limited growth associated with municipal society, including improvements in the guideline of law along with a stronger part with regard to approved religions, NGOs, charities along with other actors within areas which bring about sociable balance and don't problem Communist Celebration rule." This can be a notable change in thinking, that has observed U.Utes. officials promote the idea which Chinese language financial improvement, as well as economic relationships along with China will bring about a steadily democratic society; however, more faith seems to be placed in the grassroots movement than one which begins from the top levels of the Chinese federal government. Nonetheless, the cable television concludes that "[i]n areas such as Tibet as well as Xinjiang, the fear of separatism leads to tight limitations about the development of civil society." This method is viewed as counter-productive through the official, that suggests that the Ough.S. federal government "should still express...serious issues more than Beijing's individual privileges report and attract China's developing awareness that higher respect for individual rights, religious independence and also the guideline associated with regulation assists to advertise the very development as well as sociable stability which China looks for as well as to enhance China's worldwide picture." Such a strategy might take substantial diplomatic abilities thinking about "China's weird fear that the Usa secretly promotes routine change as well as ‘separatists' within Taiwan, Tibet as well as Xinjiang".

The actual wires provide understanding of the daily company of diplomacy that is hardly ever afforded to the general public, and it is interesting to note the quantity of function done nowadays on Uyghur issues. The importance of the actual part of the United States as a keep track of associated with Uyghur individual rights problems within personal conversations is made obvious, as well as contrasts with its tactful public position. The staff of the Uyghur Human Rights Task is actually comfortable with pressure the Chinese federal government exerts upon Uyghur activists; still, the facts of Chinese language federal government pressure on its alternatives is actually illustrative of the degree which Chinese language authorities make an effort to control contradictory stories. With increased revelations in the future through Wikileaks, concerns more than Uyghurs may not grab the headlines, however the cables possess shed brand new gentle on the paperwork associated with human privileges conditions in the Uyghur region.

The coming of Islam was a great modification since it was supported by the assimilation of the Uyghur land in the immense Turkic and Islamic Kingdom. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan progressively replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used at present.

If their writing, their own language and their religion mark a real big difference with the tradition of Chinese Han, Uyghur People also differ from their characteristic, so aspect of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features pointing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek roots of these men and these women.

Uyghur Alphabet by turtle5001tw

For a few years, China has integrated the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only 8 million people - a little for this great region. Therefore, Uyghur people are now part of the 56 ethnic minority groups having been well known in an official way by the People's Republic of China.

This particular statute allows them a few rights in a country exactly where their difference is very often repressed. Therefore, Uyghur people escape the "single child policy" and their language is accepted as the second official language in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The integration of the Uyghurs and their culture in China, however, appears pretty illusory. The presence of all natural sources in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and its area with countries acknowledged as very sensitive, clearly encouraged the government to accelerate the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the more significant responsibility work opportunities.

In reaction to this true will to assimilate the Uyghurs into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Asserting more flexibility, but mainly the recognition of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in area Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The situations of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghurs population continues today to proudly continue to keep their identity and their traditions , even though they become a minority on their own land.

Whos Making Money

Washington (CNN) – While Donald Trump may be focusing on his television show, a senior adviser - who has been pushing a possible presidential bid for the real estate tycoon - will make a visit to Iowa on Monday.

Michael Cohen, executive vice president at the Trump Organization and a special counsel to Trump, will go to Des Moines on Monday to meet with Republican party officials, organizers and potential sources of campaign money.

Cohen helped create the website ShouldTrumpRun.com, which is not connected to Trump and was set up independently. His visit comes on a day six other likely Republican candidates will be in the state, home to the nation's first caucuses February 6.

"I'll be meeting with significant people in Iowa, including large donors," he told CNN. "I'm gauging the reception Mr. Trump would have … In June, when he hopefully decides to run, I'll be able to turn the information over to him."

Cohen said he is meeting with about a dozen "leading GOP representatives" during the trip. And though Trump is aware of the trip, he did not ask his adviser to go.

He will also attend the Iowa Faith and Freedom spring event Monday night, where Newt Gingrich, Tim Pawlenty, Herman Cain, Rick Santorum and Buddy Roemer will address a gathering of social conservatives.

Trump, who won't make a decision on whether to run for the presidency until the last episode of "Celebrity Apprentice" airs, told the Des Moines Register that he may make a visit to Iowa before making the final call. "I will meet many, many people, maybe all of the people. If I decide to run, I will be shaking hands with everybody," he said.

One person who's not a fan of Trump is Sen. Lamar Alexander, R- Tennessee. He told Candy Crowley on CNN's "State of the Union" that Trump's favorable ratings in a recent poll "says more about the media than Donald Trump."

Alexander said, "There's always someone like Donald Trump who runs who has absolutely no chance of winning and who is well known. I mean, he's famous for being famous. He may be good in business but he's not going to be president."

CNN's Steve Brusk and Natalie Apsell contributed to this story.

I think the whole rhythm of the filmmaking and the dialogue is different than what it would have been. It flows in a more emotional and staccato way. It’s interwoven and interlaced with a level of humor and emotional intensity that are based on the realism of the characters. Also the movie within a movie, the HBO documentary about Dicky, the Christian Bale character, is real and I seized upon that as a filmmaker and wanted to use that as a device in the film. Not only dramatically as a defining moment, which Scott Silver had focused on, but I wanted to also use it as a framing device throughout the film, that there was this documentary crew around and you could do interviews with the characters. So we did interviews with Mark and Christian as the characters on the fly and we did interviews with the sisters. We did interviews with local people who used to be mayor and town manager and real people about Dicky and Micky and their impact on the city, and that all got used in the movie as part of the story.

Music was also something that I really focused on, the style of music that these guys would listen to and the kind of soundtrack that would really propel through their story and that resulted in some of the great music that’s in the movie that I think is married well to the dramatic turns.

We actually had the opportunity to ask some of our listeners what questions they might have for you and Ben here asks, “I’d like to hear about the choice to use the song ‘Here Again I Go On My Own’. Was the scene where the two brothers sing along while walking to the ring based on reality or was it just the most incredible filmmaking choice of 2010? And if it was invented, who invented it? The power of that moment where these two guys find solidarity in this song before the big moment, combined with the fact that it is a song more associated with hair metal silliness more than emotion, made it probably my favorite scene of the year and I’d like to hear David O. Russell talk about it. Any thoughts about that particular choice?

That song, the Whitesnake song, was one Micky actually used as his entrance song for many of his fights. I always want to look for the most emotional and poignant thing, such as the moment when Alice sings in the car with Dicky and they sing that Bee Gees song, which to me that was a very powerful way to show their special bond. In this case, to show the bond between the two brothers, I thought it was very affecting to see them in the tunnel, to see their emotional bond before they went out to this big event and for Dicky to be singing the song with Micky and for them to be singing it together, so that was an idea I brought to the film.

You mention that song with Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. “Jag” asks about incest relationships in your films, [one being] Spanking the Monkey obviously. But also according to “Jag”, I don’t know if this is correct, that you have said before that Melissa Leo and Christian Bale’s relationship feels in some ways incestuous, especially in the scene where Bale is singing to her in the car. Can you comment on that or is that way off base?

No, that’s absolutely true. When I was first looking at the story, I immediately said there’s an incestuous relationship thing going on here and when I was selling myself as a director, I said I want to make more of the emotion of the relationship. This movie’s in my wheelhouse because I totally get those kind of family relationships having done Spanking the Monkey and Flirting With Disaster and I really think that sort of odd bond between Alice and Dicky should really be felt emotionally and almost romantically. When you look at their family albums, Alice, god bless her after having had nine kids, is still a beautiful woman who could look like she was as much her son’s girlfriend as much as she was his mom so that is true.

I promise this will be the last time I mention Darren Aronofsky’s name during this interview –

You can mention him as many times as you want because I was happy that Darren’s credit showed up on the film right before we went to final print. I said, “What that all about?” and they said he had the right to put his name on the film contractually and he saw the film and loved it and he wants his name on it so I take it as a compliment.

Right, because you mentioned in the EW interview that you were taken aback when he called to tell you about wanting to getting executive producer credit and I kind of wanted you to elaborate on that if you could.

Oh no he didn’t call me, I saw the credit on the final cut of the film and I said “What?” And yeah, I was taken aback. But then he was very sweet about it when I did see him. He embraced me and told me how much he loved the film and I’d heard he wanted his name on there because he loved the film and I think that’s a great compliment coming from a great filmmaker.

It’s been a number of years since your last film and we’ve heard about a bunch of projects that you’ve been attached to, for example Grackle with Matthew McConaughey and Nailed as well. For some reason these projects haven’t gone very smoothly. I’m wondering if you could talk a little about these projects and are there any sort of common factors that you can identify that cause problems, do you feel like you choose tricky projects or tricky ways of financing them?

Well, we need to be specific about what’s what because people, especially in the age of the Internet, just start chucking ideas around which are not based in fact and they pretty much just get picked up as fact. They’re all different. I wrote a couple of things after Huckabees that didn’t get made and that was my own responsibility because I decided not to make them. I was going through a period where I wasn’t feeling the material and a harder period for me as a filmmaker. It also resulted in me becoming a better filmmaker and a better writer and a more instinctive one. But there was a period there where I was questioning everything and Huckabees wasn’t entirely what I wanted it to be and I was going through a divorce so I can take responsibility for that.

Nailed was a project that any of the troubles with that had nothing to do with me. Those was about the company was financing it, and this was during the Madoff era, was inconsistent. I had never seen anything like it. Our financing got turned on and off like a faucet and we were shut down nine times during the production, having nothing to do with me, just having to do with the nature of the financing company. After that went on enough times I had to move on with my life, I have a family to support and I had to move on and write other things and make other films, you know? I spent almost two years trying to get that finished and I just said ok, I got to move on.

The Grackle was a picture that was written by the guys who wrote Bad Santa, [John] Requa and [Glenn] Ficarra, really funny, smart writers. They were the guys who also made I Love You Phillip Morris, great directors too. I thought that could be really funny. I was talking about making that and getting them to do a draft when my dear friend Mark Wahlberg came to me with The Fighter. So as much as I thought that was really a funny project, if I have to pick between someone who’s a little like a brother to me and that other project I’m going to have to go with The Fighter.

Those guys wrote me, Requa and Ficarra, and they said, “Gee, now you’re really sorry you didn’t make The Grackle aren’t you?” They meant it as a joke. [laughs]

[laughs] I think you made the right choice, actually.

[laughs]

Well that’s interesting and I apologize, I did not mean to perpetuate –

Oh no need to apologize man, I’m happy to answer any of those questions, I just want to set them straight.

Right, right. Now last question about projects. This is from Rodrigo from The Playlist who’s asking these questions about Old St. Louis with Vince Vaughn.

Let’s talk about that. That was a really good project that I re-wrote for Vince kind of in the vein of Paper Moon. I thought I’d be making that this autumn but it’s really not up to me a lot of times. In that case a lot of it was up to Vince who decided to make the Ron Howard project instead, because we were supposed to making that, and he went off to make The Dilemma with Kevin James and that’s what happened with that. So, you know –

Yeah, sometimes things just don’t work out or don’t happen, I understand.

Well there’s still talk about making that project and we may still make it when the timing’s right. That happens all the time in this business.

I gotta ask you about Uncharted. Can you talk about your relationship with the property to begin with, had you played the games before you were approached with the project in the first place and just talk a little about that because it’s certainly one of my favorite games on the Playstation.

Ah, big game player!

I wouldn’t describe it that way, but sure.

My good friend Chuck Roven who produced the Batman movies like The Dark Knight, and produced Three Kings with me, came to me with Avi Arad who used to run Marvel Comics and who does the Spider-Man movies, with Amy Pascal, the head of Sony, and said, “What do you think? Would you like to try to create a really smart, interesting, intense franchise based on this game?” And I said yeah, let me check it out.

My son plays most of the games in our house, and I will play them with him but I’m not hardcore. I’m not going to present myself as hardcore. But I played the game a bunch of times and I also read as much as I could about the game and I met the game’s creator, Amy Hennig, who’s really cool. I started to brew together what I thought could be a really cool idea that I’d never seen in a film before…Really intense action and really intense family dynamics on a global stage. To grow a game into a movie is an interesting proposition because a game is a very different experience than a movie. You guys are playing the game, and it’s about playing the game. It’s not about a narrative embracing you emotionally. You know what I’m saying? So, I want to create a world that is worthy of a really great film that people want to watch and rewatch, so that’s what I’m working on right now.

My last question is, I don’t know if you’ve read on the interwebs but a lot of people have made a number of suggestions as to how one should go about making an Uncharted game. I wonder if you have any reaction to that, or do you even know what I’m talking about to begin with?

Well I’ve had people come up to me after screenings and pitch people they think should play the roles and I think we’ve seen that before with movies like Interview with the Vampire where there was a lot of fans of Anne Rice’s book and there were a lot of strong opinions about how to make it.

As far as I’m concerned, I’m very respectful as far as the core content and sprit of the game, but beyond that it’s my job as a filmmaker to make what I think is going to be an amazing movie. People have to trust that and let that go, I think. There’s not a bunch of movies you can point to that are made from games that are amazing movies, that stand up to time as a franchise or as [individual films]. I personally think it’s really cool when you see that someone like Darren Aronofsky is going to make an X-Men movie or to get someone such as myself to make this picture. You can be guaranteed that it’s going to be real, it’s going to be raw, it’s going to be intense, it’s going to be original, and it’s going to be propulsive. And those are all the things that I want when I go to watch a movie like that.

Well David O. Russell it’s been an honor to speak with you today. Thanks so much for joining us on the Slashfilmcast and thank you for taking time to answer our questions and those of our readers and listeners.

Thank you David for having me. Rock on and I’ll be talking to you soon I hope.

Good luck at the Oscars this year.

Thank you. We’ll need it!
